In 2024, Athader SL commissioned a new Heavy Gauge, High yield strength Cut to Length Line at Gonvarri Industries’ Service Center in Azeitão (Portugal).
Designed to handle some of the most demanding steel grades in today’s market, the line has rapidly become a key asset in the plant’s production capabilities.
The incoming coils processed by the line feature:
- Width: 2000 mm
- Thickness range: 1.5 to 12 mm
- Yield strength: up to 900 MPa
Engineered specifically for carbon steel coils with extreme mechanical requirements, the line is proving its value daily delivering consistently flat sheets in packages tailored to the needs of Gonvarri Industries’ most demanding customers.
At the heart of the installation is Athader’s new dual motor E Drive leveller, a major technological step forward. Its two independent motors create the internal tension required to reach plastic deformation levels exceeding 80%, far above what conventional roller levellers can typically achieve. Equipped with two interchangeable roller cassettes, the leveller handles a wide range of thicknesses and yield strengths with remarkable precision and repeatability.
Complementing the leveller is a high performance flying shear, capable of continuous cutting at speeds up to 44 m/min, enabling annual production levels of up to 300,000 tons. Downstream, a dual station stacker—designed for sheet lengths up to 14 meters and featuring lateral discharge—ensures rapid evacuation of finished bundles and minimizes downtime during product changeovers.
All systems are seamlessly integrated through a state of the art electrical and control architecture, supporting remote diagnostics, advanced data management, and compliance with the latest industrial safety and cybersecurity standards.
The result of close collaboration between Gonvarri’s Technical Direction and Athader’s engineering teams, this installation represents a new benchmark for modern coil processing plants—fully prepared for the next generation of materials, digital communication protocols, and Industry 4.0 level connectivity.
